Semester Reflection

At the beginning of the semester I was excited to learn about social media and had no idea we would be creating a fake business or running different pages. I liked that we got to have a business we enjoyed and create content that was original because it made it more fun and enjoyable. I am glad I got to take this class and learn what I did because I run the Facebook page for the place that I work at and I learned a lot!


I expected to learn about different social media pages and how they work, maybe the histories on them, but didn't expect to actually create accounts. It was fun but a lot of hard work and I felt it was sometimes a little too time consuming for a 2 credit course and a full course load of other classes during the week. Nevertheless I still feel I now know a lot more about how these different sites work and the best way to run them!


What I actually learned was how to interact with customers and gain followers by posting during certain times and posting different things that would gain attention of followers. I am pretty good at computers but I learned a lot more about different features on sights and how to insert things like links in blog postings. I also learned that a blog is still a website and can be used to track and gain followers to better understand who your target market is.


Overall I really enjoyed this class and the fun atmosphere it had and especially that our business was something we enjoy! I liked the list post that we did on our blog and learning about different video services that we used because I am now going to use them to make sale ads for the horses I sell! I also liked Hootsuite and wish we would have learned about it sooner because it made it a lot simpler for my posts as my internet at home is really bad! Thanks Laurie!

Cold Weather Question: To Blanket or Not to Blanket?

This time of year when the leaves start to fall and snow is in the forecast, horse people all around start to panic on whether or not they should blanket their horses. In this blog post, I wanted to dispel some common blanketing myths and talk about what types of blankets are best for different weather.

Some people choose to blanket their horses as soon as the temperature drops and their equine partner is dressed head to toe in a more expensive outfit than anything I have in my closet. On the other hand, there are those who choose to throw Brownie some hay and call it good and there are also those in between who only blanket occasionally. Is one specific group right? Well the answer we have is no. Here at Han-Ney Equestrian Center we choose to keep certain horses who live inside most of the time blanketed when they're outside due to the fact that they don't have a full hair coat. Others who live outside most of the time only get blanketed when it rains or sleets so that the under-layer of their hair doesn't get matted down.

This may not seem like the perfect answer you were looking for, but every horse is different and it is up to the owner to decide what is best for each individual horse. Below is a picture of a blanketing chart which is helpful when it comes to making the decision on whether or not to blanket.

Top 15 Girls in the World!

I'm sure by now, every barrel racer knows that the NFR is fast approaching and on December 1 2016, you can bet they will be glued to their televisions for those ten days! The National Finals Rodeo is the "Super Bowl" of rodeo and the prize money is some of the biggest in the industry with almost $85,000 being paid off per round, and over $250,000 for the final average award. There are also other cash and awards being given out including a new Dodge truck, saddles to the top 15 girls, and many other items. There will be a total of $10,000,000 awarded in total prize money with $1,100,000 given to the barrel racers.

Mary Burger (pictured right) set the world on fire this year earning a whopping $190,977 competing as also the oldest girl this year at 67 years old! The list of the top 15 girls in the world that get to compete at this years NFR has been released and they are as follows in order of money earned. Fall Harvest Trail Ride & Tack Sale!

We loved hearing the feedback on our last post and getting to know our clients and the products they use; it makes our jobs easier and helps us feel closer to everyone! To kick off the "end" of riding season, we are going to be having our first ever Fall Harvest trail ride and have a tack sale the next day to help clean out those tack rooms before winter. We just cleaned and organized ours and found a bunch of tack we haven't used or multiple items that we only need one of, so we got to thinking and decided to have a get together!

On Saturday, November 12, 2016 at 9:00 am, we are going to be meeting up here on our property and trail riding around the surrounding area and trails as a way to relax and enjoy our horses and how hard they have worked all year. This is going to be a relaxed atmosphere so there is no set time on when we will be getting back but we expect around 1:00 pm although those who wish are welcome to ride longer. Afterwards we will be enjoying a campfire dinner around the fire, games to play, and roasting s'mores to end the night!

On Sunday, November 13, 2016 at 10:00 am we are going to be hosting a tack sale in our main barn and any volunteers willing to help would be very much appreciated! You are welcome to bring whatever tack you don't use and mark it with a tag of some sort and your name, and we will have tables and racks for everything to be on. Please see the flyer below for more details; the sale will be going on until 4:00 pm and you are welcome and encouraged to stay overnight on Saturday night.

High Tech Horses Feeling Better With...Lasers!

Alright I know what you're thinking, what do lasers and horses have in common and why would I want one by my horses?! Well fear not, they are a lot safer than you think and have many beneficial uses for healing and helping your equine athlete perform at their peak! There are many laser systems out there to use, rent, and purchase but the prices vary greatly and not everyone has the need or availability and that's where we step in. We here at Han-Ney Equestrian Center use the Respond Laser System which is one of the best systems on the market and has many versatile uses.

Although there are a few different names out there, LASER therapy stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Want me to speak English now? In simple terms, it just means there is a big, intense, highly focused beam of light that penetrate tissue and help promote healing and strengthening in many areas. We use a class B laser on horses here at the center because it is the safest for both human and animal and seems to work the best for our needs. The results have been astounding and horses that came in dead lame walked out the door sound!

You know how the only thing you can seem to remember from high school is "the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell" but even though you can rattle that off faster then your cell phone number, do you know what it means? When light from the laser enters the cell's mitochondria, it is absorbed and increases activity and ATP, ROS, and NO are affected to promote healing and cell regeneration. Boobs and Barrels

If you have been following us on our Twitter page, you will see we have been trying to put together a jackpot barrel race for the end of the year, but we wanted it to benefit someone. With the recent breast cancer diagnosis's of a few fellow barrel racers, we couldn't think of a better organization to raise money for, and during Breast Cancer Awareness Month! We have picked a date to have the jackpot and we couldn't be more excited to support such a great cause!

There is going to be a 70% payback for the jackpot, and the rest will benefit local breast cancer charities to help those affected with this terrible disease. We will be accepting donations and are putting together a silent auction, and this information will be available on our Facebook page once it becomes available. We will be having the race at the Han-Ney Equestrian Center indoor arena in River Falls Wisconsin on Friday, October 28 2016, and the office will open at 5:00 pm. Barrel Racers with a Day Off!?

You read that right, we here at Han-Ney Equestrian Center had a day off to relax without stalls to clean, horses to exercise, or fence to fix! A few days ago, we had the honor of having some local guys and gals over to see the facility and ride a few horses and learn what we were all about, and when we found out one of them owned a record shop we just had to check it out! We had the opportunity to spend a few hours at B Side Records and Concerts where they offer vinyl music and live shows and they were nothing but inviting and knowledgeable. Don't worry, we put on our clean boots before heading to town.

I'll be honest, my friends and I have pretty much 0 experience when it comes to records or anything related, aside from what we had seen on television and I have to say, I was a little leery. We ended up having a blast though! I have to say, Vinyl sounds so much better than an iPod or radio and I had no idea they still put today's tunes on records! Mind=blown.

Here's the fun part folks, next Saturday, October 22 after the jackpot barrel race we are going to have live music that B Side hooked us up with! So this means if you want to stay the night in your trailer, you are welcome to do so and the show will be FREE! Alcohol is BYOB for those of age and we're expecting a big turnout, so please park appropriately. We can't wait to see you there and we hope you enjoy the show! We are not sure who the band will be, that will be a surprise, but we do know it will be country western and a few rock and roll tunes.
